Wholeheartedness
by DW Green — April 22, 2015
Perfect. Values. Wholeheartedness. Humility.
Adam speaks about perfection in this week’s blog. In the spiritual realm of life, it is said that all life, in all its expressions is perfect. But spiritual is another conversation for another day and another blog, though spirit is a topic worth exploring. To provide context for the word perfection let’s consider the notion of values.
Values are a set of guiding principles that unite people as they work toward achieving a common goal, their purpose. In their strongest form—when individual employee and organizational values are in sync—they generate tremendous energy. Rather than just complying, employees become more committed, enthusiastic and driven, and they have a reason for caring about their work. They enjoy a sense of collaboration, group spirit and pride that make the company more fully alive. Great service companies have a soul that underlies their strategies and day-to-day operations. Although strategies and tactics may change, the company’s value system, or soul, remains the same. It is this continuity of values that will sustain business success, even in the most volatile times. The DW Green management team spent countless hours over the course of a year working on our company values. We amassed an incredible list. And while we didn’t discard many, we identified and selected seven core values. The Number 7 represents or symbolizes perfection and completion. The number seven is a very powerful and spiritual number.
I want to specifically mention our second and third values as they provide balance for each other and embrace the concept of perfection.
Value 2: Wholeheartedness.
Wholeheartedness is our version of perfection.
Some notes on what Wholeheartedness MEANS to us:
- Passion: give it your all. Every project, every assignment we strive to bring our A game and give it our best effort. Hit the project out of the park every time.
- Perseverance: we don’t give up.
- Meaning: do the work with purpose.
- Consciousness: things that are done with your whole heart become a conscious decision. It has purpose and meaning to you. You’ve made a decision about it.
- Innovation: when you put all your abilities, your whole self into a project, it’s not just DOING it, its finding effective ways to create something better.
- Belief in yourself: confidence in that what you’re doing is good and true.
- Faith is required, in order to be wholehearted. There are a lot of reasons to say, “it’s not worth it”. Have Faith in your intuition, and faith in your teammates.
- Commitment: do the best you can. Always Be—ALL IN!
Value 3: Humility.
Humility is what grounds our wholeheartedness. We strive to be the best we can be. As we grow and improve our skill sets we know we can always do better.
Some notes on what Humility MEANS to us:
- Honor: to honor the other person.
- Compassion: it’s what’s inside of us that drives our service to others.
- Sense of self: understand who you are, your strengths and weaknesses.
- Fulfillment: finding beauty and fulfillment in small things and sharing it with others.
- Confidence: in our abilities and modesty for them, also knowing others can add and contribute to them.
- Awareness of Ego: Right sized ego, not too big or too small. No ego at all is even better.
- Open minded: knowing we don’t have all the answers and we’re not right all the time. Always be open to differing views and perspectives. We embrace diversity.
- Acceptance: trust ourselves, our team members and accept each situation as it presents itself.
- Collaboration: our best work is accomplished with input from all.
Our quest of perfection is pursing each project with mindful wholeheartedness, humility and appreciation for the work itself.
